Self Motivation Is Super Simple! Part 5
Next we come to this matter of ideas. Once you have an exciting goal, there’ll be problems to solve on the way to achieving it. A good skill to have right about now is idea spinning. And that’s where many of us start to bog down.
Since we’re walking through new territory, we often don’t have a frickin’ clue what we’re doing. We don’t know how to find out or figure out which way to turn next. We go blank, get confused, start feeling overwhelmed and lose our early momentum.
If this has happened to you, don’t feel ashamed. It happens to every single person who tries to take a step into new territory. It’s so universal they ought to write a country song about it.
With weepy steel guitar accompaniment:
Oh I’m so confused, my head’s such a mess.
….. When I first started out, I knew where I was headed,
But now my big, noble dream’s all shredded,
….. And where I’m at here, I can’t even guess.
I think I should stop and take a long rest.
….. Cause my life is a tangled rat’s nest.
This experience is SO common that they’ve invented a special term for it. In technical language, it’s called the “Aw shit, what the **** do I do now?” syndrome.
Fortunately, there are several things you can do about this. One of the first and best ways of dealing with stalled momentum is what our guest author Kerry Sullivan calls…
Mind Storming to Your Success
By Kerry Sullivan
Have you ever been passionate about a great idea or goal only to find yourself stuck because you can’t figure out how to practically make it a reality? Well, it’s often very easy to think of an idea, but very hard to make it happen. Ideas are cheap. Making them a reality takes hard work. Usually we encounter all kinds of problems that stand between the idea and its implementation. Sometimes those problems can seem insurmountable.
So what should you do?
Brian Tracy believes that “mind storming” is the best approach. This is a strategy to help you flex your creative muscles so that you can come up with ways to hurdle the obstacles that stand between you and the realization of your goals.
Researchers have found that 95 percent of the children between the ages three and five were “highly creative.” But when they studied teenagers, they found that only 5 percent of teens were considered to be “highly creative.” That’s a very dramatic reduction in creativity. These statistics indicate that our creativity levels drop as we get older.
Charles’ Note: Interestingly, those figures continued dropping as they went on up the education chain. College students scored lower than high schoolers, and grad students had lost a shocking amount of their creativity. Ironic, isn’t it?
Mind storming, says Brian Tracy, is a great way to recover our creative abilities. And creativity is crucial to helping us accomplish our goals and realize our ideas. Here’s the way it works.
First, write down your goal succinctly in the Present tense, make it Personal, and in a Positive tone. These are called the “3 Ps.” Once you have done that, you need to make a list of 20 ideas that will help you accomplish that goal. It will be easy for you to come up with the first few ideas that come to your mind. But the further down the list you get, the harder it will be to think of good ideas.
DON’T GIVE UP! Even though you might feel like you’re frying your brain to think of a new idea, the best ideas usually appear at the bottom of the list.
This simple exercise can bring phenomenal results. Many ideas never come to life simply because we don’t take the time to think creatively about how to overcome the obstacles in the path.
So get out there, stay focused, and think creatively by “mind storming” to turn your goals and ideas into real accomplishments!

Back to Charles:
This is such a simple thing to do – just think of possible ways to get through whatever’s blocking your way. Just that. What’s most surprising about this technique is not how effective it is. No, the surprise comes when we look at how few people will simply sit down and do it.
If we were sitting in a room together, and I told you there was a 70 to 90 percent probability you’d find a million dollars beyond the door across the room, you might not totally believe me, but wouldn’t you at least stand up, go open the door and check what’s on the other side?
Now, I know that not everybody would. Some people are just too, too cool. “Yeah, so what dude? I don’t care.”
But I’m assuming you’re not afflicted with terminal coolness, and that you would at least look – even if you felt self conscious and a little foolish. After all, a million bucks are a million bucks, right?
Well, some very savvy people have just told us that on the other side of this mind storming exercise lie the solutions to your problems, and that it could lead to the fortune you’ve been desiring.
So have you started your list yet? You’ll want to hurry up and get it done because the sixth and final part of our series on Motivation is about finding and bringing out your own consistent peak performance.
Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
Charles
