Self Motivation Is Super Simple! Part 6
So far in this Self Motivation series, we haven’t seen anything that’s complicated. And this next step is no exception. Finding and bringing out your own peak performance is just as brain-dead simple, just as logical, just as easy to do as all the other steps we’ve already examined.
The only part that slows some folks down is the idea that they may never have done some of these things in just this way before. But since that’s not a good way to motivate ourselves or anybody else, let’s make a small agreement between ourselves – okay? – that we won’t back out the door quite yet. We’ll simply bear down, put up with the minor discomfort of facing new stuff for just a bit longer, and start playing with some of these techniques, putting them into action.
This sixth technique is especially useful because with it you can lift yourself into a whole higher league. It’s a simple, low pressure way to import directly into your mind and body the skills, talents and mindset of the top performers in your field. When you do this, the professionals who inspire you to dream big will also enable you to achieve those dreams.
Now, settle back and pay close attention as guest author Kerry Sullivan gives you the path to…
Discovering Your Own Peak Performance
By Kerry Sullivan
Want to be a top performer in your profession or hobby? I’ve discovered a great way to help you do that. It comes from an NLP method called “modeling.” And if you apply this method, you will soon find that you can really “crush it.”
With NLP modeling, you identify one of the top performers in your activity. After you study that person carefully, you will learn to mimic them. It doesn’t matter what your profession or hobby is. Modeling will help you take big strides forward.
I’m a triathlete who loves to run, swim and cycle. So I’ll use my own sport as an example of how modeling works. The runner that I most admire is Haile Gebrselassie, an Ethiopian long-distance runner who has broken 26 world records during his career. Even at the age of 35, he set the world record for marathon running in Berlin, in September 2008. This guy is truly an amazing runner.
So what I do is to watch him run over and over again. I study the way he moves his arms, the way he carries himself, the way he holds his head. I observe his relaxed position. Once I’ve fixed all his movements into my mind, I then close my eyes and visualize him running. I will envision him from different angles; from the side, the top, the back, and the front. This helps me to capture his every move, and to make his talent part of my own mental process.
With that, I then envision myself running just like Haile. I think about how it will feel, the wind in my face, the sound of my feet hitting the pavement, the sweat, and the rhythm of my breathing. In my thoughts, I mimic all of his movements as if I were him.
If I stopped at this point in the process, this method wouldn’t make any difference. You have to go out there and take action. So once you have finished the mental work, you should then make it happen. Now that you have made the top-performer’s model a part of your mental framework, you will find that it’s much easier for you to actually perform the same way.
So get out there and rock on!

Back to Charles:
Modeling is so simple that people have been doing it for centuries. But till recently we didn’t have a clear scientific description of the process, and were unclear how to intensify it.
So now we know – it’s just a matter of paying close attention to someone who’s successfully doing what you want to do, then vividly imagining yourself doing the same things in the same way. And finally, you go out and try to physically perform the moves you were imagining.
It’s a proven fact that if we mentally rehearse an action, it actually builds a strong, comfortable foundation for the corresponding physical skills.
You’ve probably read about the college students who were tested on their skill with shooting baskets from the free-throw line. A large group of students were tested, then divided up into three statistically equivalent groups.
Group one were told to avoid practice for the next two weeks. Shouldn’t even go into the gym.
The second group were told to practice shooting baskets for 20 minutes a day for two weeks.
And the third group were instructed to stand at the free throw line and to imagine shooting baskets (but without a ball).
Results – group one… no change. Group two… 20% improvement. Group three… 19% improvement without ever touching a basketball.
Are visualization and modeling powerful? Of course they are. But this powerful technique has to be used to be effective. That’s why I’ll be launching my BullsEye Club soon, to give you both instruction and encouragement in your success building efforts.
Because self motivation really is super simple. But it gets even simpler when you have practice buddies and accountability partners who care what happens to you. They’ll help you keep on track.
